SHSS Faculty Facilitates Expert Group Roundtable for the UN

Mary Hope Schwoebel, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in NSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), served as a facilitator for a “Expert Group Roundtable.” The roundtable was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Interpeace.
The meeting brought together approximately 35 policy makers, practitioners, and scholars from around the world. Participants reflected upon current research and practice related to fostering the resilience of communities and societies facing situations of conflict and transition. They considered the role of the international community in bolstering the capacities of local and national government institutions and civil society organizations to foster community and societal resilience. The roundtable was convened to feed into the UNDP convened, “High Level Side Event on Fostering Resilience to Crisis,” during the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Schwoebel’s areas of interest include peacebuilding and statebuilding, peacebuilding and development, gender and conflict, culture and conflict, and the interactions between indigenous systems of governance and conflict resolution and international interventions.
