SHSS Dean Participates at Interdisciplinary Graduate Education
Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean and professor of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), was selected to participate in the “Deans Workshop on Institutionalizing Interdisciplinary Graduate Education,” held at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington., Virginia. The workshop, which was held in early April, was funded by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT). IGERT is the NSF’s interdisciplinary training program, designed to enhance the education of scientists and engineers through interdisciplinary training beyond their traditional boundaries.
The workshop was designed to develop an understanding of the definitions of interdisciplinarity and the institutional challenges of interdisciplinary graduate studies, as well as identifying strategies for supporting interdisciplinary graduate learning, and applying theories of change in higher education in light of evaluation and reflection of successes.
