Storytelling saves lives. One in five Americans live with a mental illness. Mental health is integral to overall health and well-being and should be treated with the same respect, openness, and urgency. The mission of the nonprofit organization This Is My Brave, Inc. is to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues by featuring true stories told through creative expression.

“This Is My Brave—The Show” features everyday people from our community who have auditioned to share their stories and be cast in a live production. Their stories are portrayed through personal essays, poetry, comedy, and original music. The show will take place on Sunday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, located at 10610 West Oakland Park Blvd.

Kristi Messer, M.P.H., M.S.W., LCSW, a faculty member in the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, is co-producer of this inaugural South Florida show. NSU has supported This Is My Brave, Inc. through the participation of student organizations and providing space for cast gatherings and rehearsals.
