Shelton Honored as Optometry Distinguished Alumni
Briana Johnson Shelton O.D., FAAO, class of 2001, was recently named the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award winner for Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry. The award was presented at NSU’s Annual Celebration of Excellence held at the Signature Grand in Davie in January.
Shelton followed her work of academic excellence at NSU by completing a residency in ocular disease at the Huntington Veterans Affair Medical Center. She remained on staff, co-chaired the Residency Affairs Committee and was also a staff optometrist at the Prestonsburg Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Kentucky and an adjunct professor at Indiana University’s College of Optometry. She entered into private practice in 2003 and received the North Carolina National Guard Award for Support of the Soldiers in Iraq 2005.
Shelton is an active member of the Marion County Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary club and serves as a mentor for Health Professions high school students. She has been honored with the Lions Club Service Award, Best Optometrist in McDowell County Award, and McDowell County Partnership for Children Champion of Children Award. In addition to being an active member of the AOA, AAO, NC Mountain District Optometric Society, and UNC Chapel Hill General Alumni Association, she is a clinical examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and Board of Health Member for McDowell County.
