Miles Mikolas, J.D. Martinez, Mike Fiers, Carlos Asuaje

From Maine to Detroit, west to Milwaukee and all the way across the globe to Tokyo, four former Sharks have opened their 2015 seasons at the professional level.

Coming off of a breakout 2014 season, J.D. Martinez has picked up right where he left off, hitting four home runs in his first nine games of 2015. Hitting in the middle of the Detroit Tigers’ order, right behind arguably one the best hitters to ever play the game of baseball in Miguel Cabrera, Martinez has solidified himself as one of the most dangerous hitters in Major League Baseball. Martinez and the Tigers are off to a hot start, winning eight of their first nine games, putting themselves atop the favorites to win the World Series.

Mike Fiers is the second Shark to have a breakout 2014 season, after being called up in early August and winning six of his first seven starts, including a 14 strikeout performance at Wrigley Field to defeat the Chicago Cubs by a score of 6-2. Fiers is now the fourth starter in the Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching rotation and has started one game so far in 2015. Although he lost his first outing, Fiers struck out eight batters against the highly touted Pittsburgh Pirates on April 10th.

After posting a 2-5 record with the Texas Rangers in 2014, Miles Mikolas was offered a once in a lifetime chance to play for the Tokyo Giants, a team referred to as the New York Yankees of Japan. MLB standouts Hideki Matsui, Hideki Okajima and Koji Uehara have played for the team in the past, formally known as the Yomiuri Giants. Mikolas has started two games on the mound for the Giants, pitching 11.0 innings, while striking out 11 batters. In a recent interview with NSUSharks.com, Mikolas shared his thoughts on the opportunity, claiming he is excited for the fantastic opportunity.

Last but not least, Carlos Asuaje has been turning heads in the Boston Red Sox organization since the 5’9″ 160 lbs. utility player launched 15 home runs in 2014. Asuaje has been placed in AA Portland to begin 2015, playing third base for the Sea Dogs as the 29th ranked prospect in the storied Red Sox organization. In six games played in 2015, Asuaje is hitting .250 with four hits, including one double and one triple
