Science, Medicine Writer to Speak About Genetic Research Ties to Lifesaving Cancer Treatments, Nov. 6
As part of the college’s Distinguished Speakers Series, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will welcome writer Jessica Wapner to campus. Wapner is a freelance writer focused on healthcare and medicine. Her book, The Philadelphia Chromosome: A Mutant Gene and the Quest to Cure Cancer at the Genetic Level (2013) is the focus of the college’s fall 2014 Honors Reading Seminar and serves as the basis for this talk.

Wapner’s work is published in The New York Times, Scientific American, Slate, Science, Nature Medicine, Ode, and Psychology Today. Her writing about cancer research and treatment is featured in the specialty magazines Oncology Business Review, Cure, and CR. She has described her passion for writing as evolving from a love of writing itself and a desire to enlighten, demystify, or draw attention to areas of need, such as unraveling the complex world of healthcare.
As part of the college mission to prepare students for professional careers and active citizenship, the college frames co-curricular programs and experiences around a broad annual theme for interdisciplinary exploration. The academic theme for the 2014-2015 school year is “Identity.”
Wapner’s talk will relate to this theme.

Monday, November 3: Tickets become available to the general public
