Rowing Team Informs Community on Hurricane Preparedness
Nova Southeastern University’s rowing team lent a hand to the Community Foundation of Broward by passing out information on hurricane preparedness to a nearby neighborhood in Northern Fort Lauderdale.
The community service effort was made possible through the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement at NSU. The Fort Lauderdale Ready Day project was held at the Dorsey River Bend neighborhood and included 25 members of NSU’s rowing team along with other NSU students.
The purpose of this project was to inform the residents on hurricane preparedness ahead of projected Hurricane Erika making land fall in South Florida, which was then downgraded to a tropical storm one day later.
The students not only interacted with members of the Fort Lauderdale community, but also distributed around 700 pamphlets with vital information and gave out flashlights to households without all essentials prior to the storm hitting the area. The event allowed the Sharks to make an impact on the community and helped NSU’s rowing team bond prior to the start of their 2015 fall season.
