Rowing Kicks Off Fall with Exhibition Weekend

The Nova Southeastern University rowing team traveled to Orlando, Florida over the weekend for a scrimmage race against UCF and Jacksonville. The race took place at UCF grounds on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Sharks’ line up included coxswains Victoria Porretti (So., Norristown, Pa.) and Hannah DiLorenzo (Jr., Holland Patent, N.Y.) alternating throughout the scrimmage. Junior, Bethany Warlich (Jr., Galloway, N.J.) set the tone for the Sharks in the stroke seat. Newcomer, Paige Foti (Fr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was on the opposite side of the boat in the bow seat. The eight person crew also included Marnie McLean (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada), Remi McClellan (Sr., Mullica, N.J.), Sarah Woelfer (Jr., Fishers, Ind.), Carlie Morley (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Gabriella Lopez (So., Orlando, Fla.) and McKenzie George (Fr., Loveland, Ohio).

The scrimmage race consisted of six 5-minute race pieces at ratings between 22 and 26, significantly lower than typical spring race cadences, with two crews from Jacksonville and three crews from UCF.

Head coach Heather Barney‘s thoughts post-race were: “Both teams provided phenomenal competition for our crew, which really challenged us to improve our power and efficiency throughout the morning. That’s exactly what we want to be working on at this time of the year, so it was a fantastic development opportunity for us.”

Newcomers McLean, Woelfer, George and Foti were able to experience their first rowing competition as NSU Sharks.”This race was a great way to start off the year for the Sharks rowing team,” added Barney.

Warlich, who has been rowing for seven continuous years and is one of the most experienced rowers for the Sharks, said,”This weekend served as great preparation for our team and we look forward to another great season, as we improved our time by 10 seconds from a year ago.”

She also added, “It was nice to see how we got faster and faster after every five-minute piece”.

NSU’s rowing team will be back to race at the Head of the Charles in Boston on Oct. 17th, where they will be racing in the Collegiate Four event as part of a 35-crew field that includes NCAA Division II rivals Barry, Florida Tech and Philadelphia University
