Responding in Crisis

Morgan Seiler, M.Ed., Ed.S., Penny Nevins, M.A., registered mental health counselor intern, Pamela Raspberry, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Samantha Gaulden

The “Responding in Crisis” interactive workshop took place on November 29, 2017 at NSU’s Jacksonville campus. The event explored several models of crisis intervention, while enhancing participant knowledge in assessing, responding, and referring in crisis situations.

Penny Nevins, M.A., registered mental health counselor intern and Clinical Counselor at Family Foundations, opened the workshop by asking attendees what kinds of situations cause crises. After polling the audience, she had them break into small groups of two to three participants. Answers included homelessness, lack of food, mental health issues, illness, cancer, sexual assault, rage, instability, loss of job, money issues, stress, and more. Nevins was deftly able to demonstrate how each conflict and stressor could build upon the other until a crisis emerged. She then gave each social worker, counselor, and community member in attendance the tools necessary to properly respond, assess, and mitigate the situation.

After the break, Pamela Raspberry, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Mental Health Support Specialist at Duval County Public Schools – Florida AWARE, and Morgan Seiler, M.Ed., Ed.S., Mental Health Support Specialist at Duval County Public Schools – Florida AWARE, discussed Florida AWARE and the services that their grant is providing in Duval County, and the PREPARE model.

Their next free workshop, “Generation Z: Prior Generations Just Don’t Understand,” will be taught by Heather McGinnis, M.S., registered mental health counselor intern on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 from noon – 3:00 p.m. This workshop will provide participants with tools and techniques for effectively communicating with Generation Z and share insights into the mobile-first mindset of today’s teens.
