Research Grants Awarded to NSU Dental Residents

Two dental residents from NSU’s College of Dental Medicine’s Postgraduate Endodontics Program were recently awarded research grants from the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). The national organization represents dentists who are root canal specialists.

Mark Limosani, D.M.D., who was awarded $5,500, will use the grant to study stem cell therapy to regenerate the roots of teeth. The AAE said that Limosani’s research is “highly innovative and will guide the endodontist to regenerate the roots of teeth as a more natural alternative to dental implants.” Richard Raymond, D.M.D., who was awarded $11,250, will use his AAE grant to grow new teeth in the laboratory as an alternative to dentures.  The AAE said that Raymond’s tissue engineering research is “cutting edge and helps develop exciting new treatments for dental patients.”

The residents’ thesis supervisor, Peter Murray, Ph.D., congratulated the residents for their awards and said that he looks forward to their research being published. The residents’ program director, Oscar Bolanos, D.D.S., said he is proud of his residents’ accomplishments because it was not easy for them to secure funding.  The endodontic department chair, Kenneth Namerow, D.D.S., said “We attract the most talented students to our program and this is evidence of our growing reputation for academic excellence.”
