Record Crowd Attends Boomers & Beyond
A record number of people attended the 6th Annual Boomers & Beyond 2011 health and wellness fair on Apr. 3. More than 800 people participated in the event at NSU’s Health Professions Division, doubling last year’s attendance.
This free event was held for those ages 40 and over. NSU offered a wide array of health screenings, including peripheral artery disease, BMI, glucose, blood pressure, bone density, cholesterol, fall risk, foot health, memory, medication, mental health, skin health, and social wellbeing. This year’s theme was “A Healthier YOU starts today!”
There were wellness information and health education desks (including diabetes, eye health, nutrition, and medication management), and many other opportunities to learn about prevention and disease management. The Serving Health Insurance Needs of the Elderly (SHINE) Program was there to educate people about health insurance matters. The Broward Sheriff Office’s Operation Medicine Cabinet was there to allow people to turn in old medications for safe disposal; those who brought in medications for disposal were entered in a drawing for a gift card. The Center for Hearing and Communication provided free Amplified Telephones for those who qualified.
The event featured free giveaways and entertainment by the Broward College Jazz Combo; Brazilian Voices, a female vocal group; and a DJ from radio station Majic 102.7 FM (The Greatest Hits of the 60s and 70s). Additionally, for Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, the American Parkinson’s Disease Association Southeast Florida Chapter featured an Art Show entitled, Parkinson’s Disease: A Journey in Creativity.
