Each year, NSU hosts the Fellows Society Celebration to honor and thank NSU donors who have given $50,000 or more to the university.  NSU Fellows Society members are NSU’s highest level of philanthropic benefactors. During this year’s event, NSU President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., and Fellows Society Chair Alan B. Levan inducted 24 new members, and recognized an additional 36 individuals and organizations whose giving has reached new levels.

NSU’s Fellows’ tribute included seven new “Shark Circle” members, whose giving to the university exceeds $1 million.  AutoNation Inc., together with its Chairman, CEO and President Mike Jackson and his wife, Alice, were recognized for reaching the Diamond Shark Circle level, with gifts now exceeding $10 million. The six other Shark Circle members recognized were The Alters Family, Susie and Alan B. Levan, Beatriz and Albert Miniaci, Sandy and Kenny Tate, Johannes and Ladonna Vieweg, M.D.,/Triangle Community Foundation, and Zimmer Biomet.

NSU’s own founding dean for the university’s new College of Allopathic Medicine, Vieweg, said he became a Shark Circle member to help create and support community health education programs at NSU.

“I want to make sure that this is not only about building a new medical school that enhances the university, but that it impacts and benefits the whole community and well beyond,” Vieweg said.

Several more faculty and staff members joined NSU’s Fellows Society this year, including Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations; Linda Cooke, Director of Operations, Habilitation Center; Andrea Darlow, M.B.A., Director of Development, Legacy Gifts; Karen Grosby, Ed.D, Dean of NSU’s College of Psychology; and Sharon Sullivan, M.M.H.S., Executive Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations. Newly retired Robert A. Uchin, D.D.S.,former Dean of NSU’s College of Dental Medicine also became a member.

NSU’s Fellows Society comprises 574 individuals, corporations and foundations whose gifts benefit every realm of the university – from student scholarships and academic programs to research and such community issues as human trafficking.

All gifts from the Fellows society support the Realizing Potential campaign which aims to raise $250 million, with $125 million directed towards student scholarships and resources; $75 million for faculty chairs, professorships and research start-up funds; and $50 million for 21st century education initiatives. Research is integral to all three priorities.
