NSU Hosts Day for Children Health Fair
The annual Day for Children health fair was held on Sunday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds in front of the Alvin Sherman Library on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University.
During the day, attendees were encouraged to visit the Alvin Sherman Library’s booth to sign up for a library card and enter a drawing to win a special Sharkey bag. The 8th annual health fair featured free health care and education for children ages birth to 15 years old. They received screenings for vision, medical, speech, behavior and dental, as well as physical and occupational therapy, all of which are provided by NSU’s Health Care Centers. Social services and other resources were available through collaborations with NSU’s vast network of community partnerships to meet the behavioral needs of Broward County’s children.
In addition to the health screenings, there were a variety of activities for children, including a bounce house, face painting, storybook characters, supervised sports activities, arts and crafts, games and food. This year also featured free hair cuts for children, provided by Jig Saw; Rio Latin Impact by Liz & Kids, featuring a dance and fitness activity for kids; and a Teddy Bear Clinic sponsored by the Chris Everett Children’s Hospital and the Teddy Bear Society.
The Davie Police and Fire Departments provided free fingerprinting, ID cards and free safety and installation demonstrations of child car seats. As part of the day-long activities, representatives from the Alvin Sherman Library provided library cards for Broward County residents; the League of Hearing provided amplified phones; and the Epilepsy Foundation provided free bicycle helmets.
This year’s event was sponsored by the NSU Health Care Centers, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Chris Everett Children’s Hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Walgreens, KISS FM, Costco Wholesale, WPBT-Kid Vision, Broward Family Life, Hispanic Unity, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and WFTL 850 radio.
