Pride Bite: Nova Southeastern University’s Campus Ranked One of Safest in the US
Providing a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors is a high priority at Nova Southeastern University (NSU.) To that end, there are a myriad of programs and procedures in place that all address the issue of safety and security.
NSU’s Public Safety Department is nationally recognized as an exemplary model for campus safety. In fact, a number of colleges and universities across America have contacted NSU’s Public Safety Department seeking advice on how they can replicate on their campuses what NSU has done on its campuses. And now, those efforts have received additional accolades as NSU has been recognized as having one of the nation’s safest campuses.
A recent ranking by RentCollegePads.com has NSU as the 17th safest campus in the United States. NSU was one of six colleges or universities from Florida ranked in the top 25 in the latest report.
“Such a ranking reinforces our claim to students, their parents, visitors, faculty and staff that NSU is one of the 
safest campuses in the United States,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President. “Our Public Safety Department does a tremendous job, and our excellent working relationship with local law enforcement only bolsters our efforts. Providing a safe environment will always be a priority at NSU.”
The methodology used by RentCollegePads.com involved analyzing more than 500 colleges and universities that are four-year (public, private, non-profit) institutions with more than 5,000 individuals and offers on-campus housing. Information and statistics from the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus and Security Database was used to create the Top 25 Safest Campuses list – criminal offenses on-campus from 2010-2014 were reviewed and compared with the institution’s size to determine the “crime index” (institution size divided by number of criminal offenses on campus.)
