(Class of 2010)

On April 1, 2017, the Office of Career Development (Emilio Lorenzo) and the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences (Emily Schmitt Lavin, Ph.D.) collaborated to present the third annual Pre-Health Day. This is a day where undergraduate students participate in mock interviews with professionals complete with immediate feedback on their performance. Also included was a resource fair where students learned about various research labs, medical internship programs, medical scribe, and various other pre-health related opportunities.

Participants were welcomed by Richard Dodge, Ph.D., Dean of the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, followed by a keynote address by Nick Carris, Pharm.D. and Biology Alumnus (Class of 2008). Carris is now Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine at the University of South Florida. The event continued with breakout sessions where various professionals, more than half of whom were NSU alumni, gave practical advice about their career paths to the undergraduate student attendees. The list of presenters and their abstracts are available at: http://nsuworks.nova.edu/prehealth-day/. The event continued with lunch and presentations regarding scholarships in the Health Professions available from the U.S. Army. The event concluded with a panel discuss by graduate students currently enrolled in various NSU health-related professional degree programs.

This event provides a great opportunity for students to network with professionals. In the words of biology major, Valentina Ramirez (class of 2018), “Every spring I look forward to attending Pre-Health Day, where I network with professionals in the field that I aspire to pursue. I have attended Pre-Health Day for 3 years in a row since it first started. I was so impressed with the prestige of the professionals and their willingness to help students, like myself, with our future endeavors. I am continually impressed with the organization of the program and it has been incredibly beneficial in my pursuit of a career in the medical field. What I find truly unique about this event is that most of the presenters have attended NSU (either undergraduate, graduate program, or both). This aspect genuinely allows us as current students to relate to these professionals and to realize that our goals can also become a reality. Every year that I have attended Pre-Health day, my eyes have been opened to the vast amount of opportunities in the medical field that I did not even consider before. Not only are the doctors, dentists, pharmacists and physical therapists willing to share their story, they are also willing to share their advice and contact information to provide us guidance in the future.”
