Portrait of a Warrior – Conversation with the Artist
Join us to enjoy the Portrait of a Warrior Exhibit and participate in a conversation with the artist, Wilma Bulkin Siegel, M.D. The event will be held in the Adolfo and Marisela Cotilla Gallery on the 2nd floor. The event is free and open to the public but RSVPs are required.
This event is one part of NSU’s Veterans Day celebration. On Nov. 10 at 4:30 pm, NSU will be hosting a very special performance by the “Combat Hippies Theater Group” – and all of our student veterans, employee veterans and alumni veterans are invited to this free performance. The festivities will be held at NSU’s Black Box Theater, in the Don Taft University Center, At that time, NSU will recognize our veterans during a special ceremony in their honor where they will be presented with a specially commissioned red, white and blue Shark pin.
Artist Dr. Bulkin Siegel had a distinguished career as a prominent Oncologist in New York City. A pioneer establishing one of the first hospices in the state of New York, she was also one of the first practitioners to accept AIDS patients. Following her retirement, she combined her knowledge of medicine with her passion for art, specifically, painting, by attending The National Academy of Design. She has become an award-winning artist recognized nationally for her series of people living with AIDS, Breast Cancer Survivors, The Homeless, as well as Veterans, to name just a few.
Bringing art into the medical field as an educational tool and a forum for healing, Dr. Bulkin Siegel has been instrumental in creating a program at U of Miami in Florida and Columbia Medical Center in NYC to bring artists to work with patients and also to teach medical students to see in a different way.
