Physical Therapy Students at Tampa SEC Tampa SEC ‘cloaked’ during White Coat Ceremony
On Oct. 20, NSU’s Tampa Student Educational Center (SEC) hosted a White Coat and Award Ceremony for students from the Hybrid Entry Level DPT Program and their families. During the ceremony, which is a time-honored rite of passage symbolic of the students’ matriculation into the Program, each first year student was ceremonially cloaked with their white coat by their mentors who are students in the second year of the Program (PT-2 class). Subsequently, each student also shared a personal goal that relates to one of the profession’s core values.
Members of the PT-2 class were also honored during the ceremony. In particular, nine students were awarded pins for Academic Excellence, one of NSU’s core values. They were: Joshua Adlam, Jennifer Clarkson, Jocelyn Hall, Carolyn Jones, Katherine Leon, Kyle Schroeder, Michael Selvaggi, William Siesel, and Lauren Taylor. Ms. Taylor also received an award for achieving the Chancellor’s List, an honor recognizing those that achieve a GPA of 94% and higher. Other honors bestowed were: Ms. Jessica Estrada (Altruism award), Ms. Carolyn Jones (Outstanding Leadership), and the 2011-12 class officers Carolyn Jones (President), Katherine Leon (Vice President), Eloisa Pantoja (Secretary), Amy Casteel (Treasurer), and Kantica Arora (Historian).
Sheila Nicholson, J.D., who was the keynote speaker for the event, challenged the students to remember the ceremony, their core value commitments, and their duty as physical therapists when they treat their first patient and each patient thereafter. President of the Florida Physical Therapy Association, Nicholson also encouraged students to join the professional association and give back to the community and society.
