Pharmacy Students Visit Key West Hospital

College of Pharmacy students and faculty members visit the Lower Keys Medical Center.

Nine fourth-year College of Pharmacy (COP) students and three faculty visited the Lower Keys Medical Center (LKMC) for an informal educational site visit during a 2010 COP rural health rotation in June.   Kevin Bray, director of pharmacy at LKMC, engaged the students in an interactive tour while discussing geographic barriers and the cultural challenges of remote health care facilities like LKMC in Key West as compared to other facilities; unique health issues and systems; interdisciplinary teams; and the administrative duties of a hospital pharmacist.

Students gained insight into how physicians’ orders are scanned into the LKMC pharmacy system.  During the informational exchange, students were able to practice the review and entry processes into the LKMC safe-scan system. In addition, they were exposed to a day in the life of the hospital clinical pharmacist during a tour of the LKMC facility. COP faculty and students were very grateful for their time spent at LKMC, during which they had the opportunity to learn how a medical center pharmacy works and to experience the team work at a hospital.
