PETA Executive to Speak at Law Center – April 2

Dan Mathews, senior vice president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and author of the acclaimed memoir Committed, will speak at the Shepard Broad Law Center on Thursday, April 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. A reception and book signing will follow.

Mathews’ presentation is titled “Challenging the Law on Behalf of Animals.” He will discuss ethical and legal issues PETA faces as they conduct undercover investigations (one of which recently resulted in felony cruelty charges against turkey farmers in West Virginia), seek standing to sue for animals (citing cases involving chimpanzees used in experiments), and engage in civil disobedience (Mathews led an occupation of Calvin Klein’s office in New York, which resulted in a dozen arrests—and the designer renouncing fur).

Mathews, who recently appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live, has been with PETA since 1985. He is responsible for many of the organization’s provocative efforts, including the iconic “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, and he has recruited stars as diverse as Paul McCartney, Pink, and Pamela Anderson. His irreverent book, Committed: A Rabble-Rouser’s Memoir, was released in paperback last year on Simon & Schuster and has been published this year in Australia and throughout Europe.

The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at the Law Center is hosting the event.
