Performing and Visual Arts Students Shine at Annual Black Box Awards Ceremony
Students from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences gathered together to recognize their fellow stars at the fourth annual Black Box Awards ceremony at NSU on May 2. The student-run event celebrates outstanding work in the college’s theatre, dance, and music productions—both on stage and behind the scenes.
Performers are nominated by faculty members in the Division of Performing and Visual Arts. Winners are chosen by event attendees, who vote in the weeks leading up to the ceremony. Awards are based on the students’ performances in the division’s productions presented throughout the past academic year. This year’s winners are:
- Best Actor—Alex Glamyan (The Importance of Being Earnest)
- Best Actress—Ashley Perez (Stop Kiss)
- Featured Actor—Jonathan Sanz (Ruthless! The Musical, The Importance of Being Earnest)
- Best Ensemble—Stop Kiss
- Best Production—Stop Kiss
- Techie of the Year—Liza Mascaro
- Best Design—Gillian Smith (Sound for Stop Kiss)
- Best Student Choreographer—Erika Del Pozo and Camille Arroyo (Festival of Student Works)
- Female Dancer of the Year—Sherelyn Gonzalez
- Male Dancer of the Year—Michael McGregor
- Best Music Solo or Small Ensemble—Alex Glamyan, Carlo Ricci, and Alex Weiss (Spring Music Concert)
- Best Student-Directed One-Act—Brittany Gooden (The Wedding Story—Festival of Student Works)
Additionally, faculty members from the division selected certain student performers recognized as “Stars” in their respective fields, including
New Stars:
- Dance—Zachi Samson
- Music—Rolando Del Rio
- Theatre—Jaimie Kautzmann
Rising Stars:
- Dance—Nathalie Rengel and Rachel Belmont
- Music—Yazhou Hu
- Theatre—Alex Glamyan
Lifetime Stars:
- Dance—Sabrina Talamo
- Music—Michelle Mandelbaum
- Theatre—Lauren Butler
Finally, The Promethean Theatre Award went to interns Jaimie Kautzmann and Chris Waggoner.
Each year, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Performing and Visual Arts presents outstanding theatrical, musical, dance, and visual arts productions. These performances and events serve as cocurricular opportunities for students to gain practical experience and provide the NSU community with a local resource for educational—and entertaining—performing and visual arts presentations.
