Soprano Virginia Alonso was born in Havana, Cuba and attended Florida State University, Indiana University, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University. She was discovered by Luciano Pavarotti and made her debut with him, singing La Boheme in New Orleans. She later moved to Europe where she sang in Vienna, Germany and Switzerland. With Plácido Domingo she filmed “Hommage to Seville” in Spain under the direction of James Levine and Jean Pierre Ponnelle, program which won the Emmy Award for the Best Classical Music Program. Miss. Alonso has sung over 25 operatic leading roles, among them: La Boheme, Carmen, Faust, The Medium, Don Giovanni, L’Elisir d’Amore, Eugene Onegin, Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte, etc. More than 15 operetta leading roles such as Graf von Luxembourg, Giuditta, Gasparone, Lustige Witwe, Paganini and 8 leading roles in zarzuelas such as Luisa Fernanda, La del Soto del Parral, Los Claveles, Cecilia Valdes, Agua, Azucarillos y Aguardiente and La Chulapona. Miss Alonso has been the recipient of numerous Vocal Competitions and scholarships: First Prize in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions (Southeast Region); First Prize in the Mina Kaufmann Ruud Vocal Competition, NYC; First Prize at the Liederkranz Foundation Competition, NYC; First Prize at the NATS “Singer of the Year” Competition (Indiana); First Prize at the YWCA Studio Club Annual Competitions, NYC; First Prize at the Civic Opera of the Palm Beaches Competition, FL; First Prize at the Greater Miami Philharmonic Competition, FL; First Prize at the Florida Atlantic Music Guild Competition, FL and First Prize at the Miami Young Artists Auditions, FL. She later studied in New York under the sponsorship of the Metropolitan Opera, and was recipient of several Martha Baird Rockefeller Grants, as well as many other awards.
