Outstanding NSU Undergraduate Students Honored at Annual Fall Banquet
Students from NSU’s Undergraduate Honors Program joined faculty, administration, and distinguished members of university leadership for the fall 2013 Honors Banquet on Sept. 26. Hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, the annual event recognizes Honors students for their academic achievements and excellence. The banquet also serves to welcome new students to the program.
The evening began with an interactive ice-breaker during which students, faculty, and administrators learned of, and wrote down, interesting facts about each other—such as which member of the group has gone skydiving, can name all 50 state capitals, and/or can juggle three or more items. Attendees also completed a “six degrees of separation” networking activity, discovering just how connected they were to total strangers.
Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, then welcomed the students, distinguished guests, and Honors faculty members, who not only serve as classroom leaders but also as mentors.
Before dinner, 10 students were awarded First-Week Scholarships. The recipients are new Honors students who, within their first week at NSU, secured two letters of recommendation from faculty members whom they had met since the start of the semester. These students also composed an essay about how they will contribute to and benefit from the Honors program. Awards were determined by a faculty committee.
The 2013–2014 First-Week Scholarship recipients are Nina Argibay, Timothy Bediako, Corey Burns, Samantha Hermida, Shona Joseph, Arezoo Kavehzadeh, Priscila Reyes, Rebekah St. Godard, Teodora Suciu, and Miriam Zelden.
About the Program
The Undergraduate Honors Program at Nova Southeastern University provides a rigorous academic environment through value-added curricular and co-curricular experiences for high-achieving undergraduate students. The program encourages academic integrity and leadership, professional development, engagement with faculty and peers, exploration of disciplinary and multidisciplinary inquiry, and establishment of community among members of the Honors students and faculty. More than 300 NSU undergraduate students currently participate in the program.
