Opera Composer Marvin D. Levy to Visit NSU, Discuss Award-Winning Career, Oct. 22

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Florida Grand Opera (FGO), will welcome to NSU award-winning opera composer Marvin David Levy. Part of FGO’s Community Conversations series, this special event will feature an Inside the Actors Studio-style conversation with Levy, culminating with an audience-led Q&A session.

While Levy’s acclaimed career spans more than five decades, the composer is best known for Mourning Becomes Electra, his opera translation of Eugene O’Neill’s classic 1930’s play. Mourning premiered at the famed Metropolitan Opera House in 1967 and remained there for multiple seasons—an unprecedented achievement. The concert will make its Southeastern premiere in Florida this November, presented by FGO.
Levy will speak on the inspiration and creative process behind turning Mourning Becomes Electra into an opera. Leading the discussion will be Susan T. Danis, general director and CEO of FGO, and Ramón Tebar, music director at FGO. Following the conversation, audience members will have the opportunity to ask Levy questions.
