Office of Academic Services Earns Renewed Certification for Tutor Training Program
The Office of Academic Services (OAS), which is housed within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and offers free tutoring to all NSU undergraduate students, recently received re-certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) for its tutor training program. The CRLA certification is valid through Oct. 2015.
In its evaluation of the OAS’ tutor training program, the CRLA said “ample time and opportunity is provided for the tutors to get comfortable before they are allowed to tutor.” Additionally, the CRLA complimented the office on its “good use of tutor handbook and faculty presenters to help train tutors.” Faculty members from the college often present to the office’s tutors, which enables the tutors to better understand the coursework and classroom procedures.
OAS promotes active, independent learning that seeks to assist students in developing critical thinking skills using a student-centered holistic approach, which considers the “whole student” when discussing academic success strategies.
The college’s Office of Academic Services is located in the Parker Building, suite 100. In addition to tutoring, the office offers all NSU undergraduate students testing services, academic success strategies, study areas and rooms for reserve, math DVDs for checkout, solution manuals, APA and MLA guidebooks, grammar and study skills handouts, and EyeQ speed-reading software.
