Oceanographic Center Research Scientist Serves on International Expert Panel Discussing Marine Mammals

Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center Research Scientist David Kerstetter, Ph.D. served on an international expert panel at the 63rd Annual Tuna Conference held during May 21-24 at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center in California. The expert panel was part of a special session regarding incidental catch of marine mammals in worldwide commercial fisheries. Kerstetter is a recognized expert on the pelagic longline fisheries of the Atlantic Ocean for swordfish and tuna, and his research projects often include fieldwork with commercial and recreational fishers.
In addition to serving on the panel, Kerstetter and his NSU graduate students presented ongoing research on the commercial fishery for swordfish in Morocco and Turkey. Also presenting at the Tuna Conference were 3rd year Oceanographic Center masters student Jenny Fenton who presented on her thesis research monitoring the behavior of swordfish with electronic tags, and 2nd year Oceanographic Center masters student Travis Moore who presented on his thesis work describing the food web of coastal fishes in the Florida Straits.
