OC Scientists Host Workshop on the Conservation of the Chagos Archipelago
Sam Purkis, Ph.D., assistant professor of NSU’s Oceanographic Center (OC) and Gwilym Rowlands, OC research scientist, hosted a seminar on Mar. 1 at the OC to promote awareness about the ongoing consultation by the British Government to declare the Chagos Archipelago the largest Marine Protected Area on Earth. The Chagos Archipelago, a British Territory, sits in the center of the Indian Ocean and boasts 25,000 square kilometers of pristine coral reefs. The U.S. has strong involvement in the region by virtue of the military facility on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago.
