Nursing Students Participate in Research

Nursing students examine data as part of a research project to help diagnose depression among the Haitian-American community.

Randy Denis, M.S.N. student, and Jo Ann Kleier, Director of Research, College of Nursing, are conducting a research project to translate an assessment instrument used in the diagnosis of depression from English to Haitian-Creole and then collecting data that will be used to carry out testing for psychometric properties of the translated instrument. Five Haitian-American undergraduate nursing students, including first semester students Kersaint Edme, Marie G. Thermidor and Ashley Dufanal, second semester student Nathacha Saincilus and fourth semester student Claire Baptiste, served as research assistants in the process of translation and back-translation to achieve a culturally and linguistically appropriate translation of the items. The students recognize the importance of nursing research and that their efforts may significantly contribute to the long-term health of the Haitian-American community.
