Nursing Dean Receives Women of Distinction Award
Marcie Rutherford, Ph.D.
Marcie Rutherford, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.S.N., dean of Nova Southeastern University’s College of Nursing, was one of the recipients of the 2012 March of Dimes Women of Distinction Annual Award held in December. The award is designed to honor women whose achievements in their professional and personal lives are an example to the Broward County community.
Prior to being named dean in 2011, Rutherford served in the role of associate dean of academic affairs for NSU’s nursing program and was responsible for faculty processes and curriculum. Her responsibilities included the oversight of accreditation and internal/external reviews and reporting.
As an associate professor for nursing her teaching specialties include policy, economics, finance, ethics, the surgical care of patients, and leadership. Rutherford’s publication topics include health care economics and policy. She has authored text book chapters on health care policy, the business of health care for nurse practitioners and entry-level nurses. Most recently she provided a historical research exemplar for in a qualitative research textbook.
Rutherford’s recent published manuscripts focus on the use of valuation as a tool to communicate the economic impact of the nursing service; and documenting the value of nursing. Currently, she is working on research related to the use of online learning in Ph.D. programs and exploring the experiences outcomes from distance learning teaching strategies. Additionally, she is currently a conducting a study on the use of progressive mobility in the care of patients in a critical care unit. She is the principle investigator of Florida State Funding for the Rural and Underserved, which offers nursing students at all levels experiences in educating patients on health promotion and disease prevention. She has presented at many professional nursing and non-nursing conventions and seminars.
