NSU’s Science Alive! Program Visits Afterschool S.T.E.M. at the Alvin Sherman Library

In honor of Women’s History Month this March, NSU’s Science Alive!, under the direction of Emily Schmitt, Ph.D., presented Women of Science: Past, Present and Future at the free, monthly Afterschool S.T.E.M. program, hosted by youth services librarians Kristina Knott, Katherine Labuda and Meagan Albright at the Alvin Sherman Library. Science Alive! is a program in which NSU science students work within the community to help bring science to life for children of all ages.
Schmitt and several of her NSU science students spent time working with children in grades 4-6 and grades 1-3 from the local community who had signed up for the Afterschool ST.E.M. program. Together, they performed hands-on science experiments. In one session, participants extracted DNA from fruits and vegetables in honor of the work of biophysicist Rosalind Franklin. In another session, they created cell models and learned about the work of cell biologist Lynn Margulis.
