NSU’s New M.D. College Receives Preliminary Accreditation

NSU has received preliminary accreditation for its College of Allopathic Medicine from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the organization that accredits M.D. programs in the U.S. and Canada. This major milestone allows the new medical school to accept an inaugural class of 50 students to its Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program. Those students will matriculate in August 2018.

With this, NSU becomes the only medical school in Broward County to issue M.D. degrees. It is the eighth M.D. program in Florida and one of only 149 in the United States, adding to NSU’s comprehensive offerings of health sciences degrees, including osteopathic medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy and others.

The new college’s innovative educational program will be taught in the Health Professions Division complex on our Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. We are planning to build a state-of-the-art medical education building, which will house the college in close proximity to other health-related programs.

“NSU has made remarkable commitments to medical education, research and patient care, building a strong foundation for an innovative, research-intensive medical program,” said Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D., FACS, founding dean of the college. “As a new medical college, we are in a unique positon to leverage institutional resources and external partnerships to create a new educational model that will transform the delivery of health care in our community and beyond.”
