NSU’s College of Pharmacy Holds Annual Residency Workshop
The Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists Student Chapter (FSHP-SC) held its 6th Annual Residency Workshop at the NSU College of Pharmacy (COP) Fort Lauderdale Campus in March 2014. Every year FSHP-SC holds this event for pharmacy students in order to provide insight on pursuing post-graduate training and further their careers as practicing pharmacists. The Residency Workshop served as the last event in FSHP-SC’s Professionalism Track which consisted of a Curriculum Vitae Workshop and Interview Skills Workshop along with related meetings, all of which were designed to strengthen the students’ professional skills to prepare them for this last stage in the program.
The Workshop was an overwhelming success this year with more than 150 students in attendance from the NSU COP Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach Campuses as well as students from Palm Beach Atlantic University School of Pharmacy. The event attracted more than 60 pharmacists and residency directors from hospitals primarily situated in the South Florida area but also included pharmacists from other areas and out of state. The day began with a Residency Showcase featuring premier programs in which pharmacy students had the chance to learn about fellowship and residency opportunities available to them. Following the showcase, keynote speaker Bill Kernan, Pharm.D., B.C.P.S., assistant director, Department of Pharmacy and PGY1 residency program director at Cleveland Clinic Florida kicked off the round table session. He spoke to the attendees about the importance of pursuing a residency and achieving provider status for the profession. The round table session provided an opportunity for students to meet with residents, pharmacists and residency directors who practiced in an area of specialty the students were specifically interested in.
The night finished off with breakout sessions titled “What to do in pharmacy school to prepare for residencies/fellowships” and “How to apply for residencies, PhORCAS tutorial, match process and interviews,” both of which aimed at providing students with guidance on how to prepare for and navigate the residency process. This final event of FSHP-SC’s Professionalism Track allowed students to really apply the skills they acquired from previous stages of the track and provided them with the opportunity to practice and enhance those skills so that they may be better prepared for their future endeavors after graduation.
