NSU Women’s Soccer Clips Northwood Seahawks 3-0; Hosts Florida Tech Sept. 22

The NSU women’s soccer team (2-3-0) earned its second victory of the season on Sept. 14, defeating the Northwood Seahawks (4-2-0), 3-0.

Malin Broberg and Shelby Wright each scored their first career goals against the Seahawks. Senior midfielder Alexis Hernandez scored her second goal of the season, tying Kesiah Wattley for the team lead.

The first half was quiet as neither team had much offense. The NSU defense held the Seahawks to three shots in the first period, all of which were saved by goalkeeper Chrissy Hy. NSU had eight shots in the opening period, four of which were on goal.

In the 50th minute, Broberg scored the game-winning goal off of a free kick just outside the center of the penalty box. Hernandez would score her goal just two minutes later off the Sharks’ first penalty kick of the season.

Wright would put the game out of reach in the 75th minute when she scored the third and final goal of the game. Broberg earned the assist on a corner kick by crossing the ball directly in front of the goal for Wright to head it in. Northwood had one more shot on goal, but Hy made the save on her way to her second shutout of the season.

The Sharks will return to their home turf Sept. 22 for the first Sunshine State Conference game of the season against Florida Tech at 7 p.m. For more on NSU Athletics, visit www.nsusharks.com.
