NSU Women’s Basketball Player Chosen to Attend Prestigious FLAME Program
Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball graduate Jasmine Wilkins has been selected as one of just 30 student-athletes nationwide to attend the Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everyone (FLAME) program, put on by the United States Olympic Committee at the end of May.
Wilkins was chosen to participate in the eight-day conference, May 27-June 3 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She applied in conjunction with NSU Associate Athletic Director/SWA Kelley Kish for the prestigious sports leadership development program.
“I found out about the FLAME program through Kelley, we had looked through a lot of internships and seminars for me to attend so I can get my foot in the door,” said Wilkins. “She sent me this in January, and I was immediately interested.
“It’s a huge honor and privilege to be able to attend this and stay (at the USOC Training Center),” she continued. “I’m going to learn a lot about leadership, and diversity and inclusion in collegiate and professional athletics. There’s a lot of speakers I’m excited to hear.”
The FLAME program is designed to help develop leaders of color for careers in sport. Wilkins, who earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in sport and recreation management, and just recently graduated with her Master’s in athletic administration, hopes to utilize this experience to enter into the world of collegiate athletics.
“I hope this seminar allows me to get my name out there, to network and meet the right people,” she said. “You never know who I might meet that could help me get into an athletic department down the line. I never in a million years thought I could apply for a program like this, especially with the Olympics, and be chosen.”
The FLAME program begins Wednesday, May 27, and features a plethora of former collegiate, professional and Olympic and Paralympic athletes, coaches, administrators and executives.
“This is a huge honor for Jasmine and I am personally thrilled she will represent NSU on the national and worldwide stage, plus growth and knowledge for her unlimited future in our industry!” said Kish.
