NSU Wins Second Place at the 2015 Broward County/Miami-Dade Annual Lifeguard Competition

The Weston YMCA was the host for this year’s 2015 Broward County/Miami-Dade Annual Lifeguard Competition where 11 teams participated in the grueling battery of events.  NSU brought two teams to this year’s competition headed up by Head Lifeguards Erica Rayter, Jessica Millar and Rialto Heller.  NSU Aquatic Intern, Brent Giannini from Ball State University, was a strong performer for only being around the lifeguard staff since the beginning of summer.  The NSU lifeguard teams were coached by Adam Caldwell, assistant director for Aquatics, who was also a judge at the competition.

The seven events consisted of  a lap swimming emergency, a child spinal chord accident in a wading pool, a child cardiac event in a water slide, a chlorine chemical burn, and even a domestic dispute stabbing at a child’s birthday party.  The NSU guards performed well under the challenging circumstances, attributed mostly to the numerous hours of monthly in-service trainings to keep the NSU pools and patrons safe.
