NSU to Host Interprofessional Zika Panel

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Zika virus an international health threat. Florida residents have the highest risk of being infected out of the 50 states due to the state’s location and tropical climate.

NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness and Center for Interprofessional Education and Practice are hosting an interprofessional panel discussion to educate and prepare the NSU community on issues surrounding Zika at  the Chancellor’s Dining Room of the Health Professions Division (5th floor).

This panel discussion on the “The Urbanized Mosquito – Looking at the Zika Virus with Interprofessional Lens” will:

  • Provide an overview of the history of the Zika Virus,
  • Discuss what we know from the WHO, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida Department of Health, and from recent confirmed cases,
  • Discuss how the Zika virus is transmitted,
  • Provide a forum for dialogue about travel to infected areas, and
  • Discuss what activities are in place in Florida to help protect the population and to outline what is needed for personal protection.

Panelists include:

  • James Howell, M.D., M.P.H., chair of rural medicine and project director, Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Jill Wallace-Ross, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Bindu Mayi, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology, NSU’s College of Medical Sciences
  • Paula Thaqi, M.D., M.P.H, director, Broward County Health Department
  • Anh Ton, Broward County Mosquito Control
