NSU Students & Staff Participate in National Conference on Student Affairs

NSU staff and graduate students recently participated in the 2010 NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Florida Drive-In Conference. The conference was held in Orlando at the University of Central Florida, and the program included presentations, panel discussions, networking sessions, and a case study competition.

The case study competition featured two NSU teams formed by graduate students from the College Student Affairs program, including: Kevin Saberre, Travis Checketts, Jon Colon, Heilit Biehl, Allison Walker, and Sara Shilling.  In addition, Angie Freeman and Josh Hammers delivered presentations during break-out sessions.  Freeman’s presentation addressed challenges and support for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Students and Professionals, and Hammers shared strategies for professional development and career planning.

During the closing ceremony, NSU was honored for having the most conference delegates among all participating institutions.  In addition, members of the NSU community were recognized for service and contributions to NASPA-Florida.  NSU Alumnus Maurice Brown received the New Professional of the Year award, and the following NSU staff members were installed as state association officers: Arlene Giczkowski, Disabilities Knowledge Community Chair; Jake Shilts, Administrators in Graduate and Professional Student Services Knowledge Community Chair; and Josh Hammers, NASPA-Florida Knowledge Communities Coordinator.
