NSU students to clean beaches as part of annual coastal cleanup initiative, Sept. 17

Each year, tons of garbage and flotsam litter South Florida’s beautiful beaches. Not only is the trash an eyesore, but it also pollutes the ocean and kills wildlife. Birds and sea creatures often mistake these items for food or can become entangled. The result can be deadly.

Students from NSU’s Oceanographic Center (OC) have decided they will not stand on the sidelines while the trash ruins their favorite beach: John U. Lloyd Beach State Park. They are organizing a beach cleanup at the park in Dania Beach on Saturday, Sept 17. The event is part of the 26th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, which was created by The Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group based in Washington D.C.

The cleanup at John U. Lloyd will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon. To volunteer, please arrive at the park between those hours, and remember to bring  water and sunscreen.
