NSU Student Selected to Receive Two Prestigious Awards
Maria Espinola, M.S., doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University’s Center for Psychological Studies (CPS), will receive two prestigious awards at the 120th American Psychological Association (APA) Annual Convention, which will be held in Orlando, Florida on August 3 and 4. Espinola will be honored by the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12) of the APA with the 2012 Distinguished Student Service Award and by the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minorities (Division 45) of the APA with the 2012 A. Toy Caldwell-Colbert Distinguished Student Service Award.
Since arriving at NSU in 2008, Espinola has received an NSU Honors Award from the Office of Admissions, recognition of outstanding achievements while enrolled at the Center for Psychological Studies (CPS), a grant from the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, the APA Travel Award, the Chancellor’s Faculty Research and Development Grant, and the Lane Family Fund Award for Hispanic Studies in Psychology.
She received additional funding to conduct 24 human rights events from the Division of Student Affairs, the Student Government Association, CPS, and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her advocacy work has been featured on the media more than 14 times including on NBC News, CBS News, and the Miami Herald. She is also featured on the NSU Video Forum, NSU Horizons Magazine, NSU Spotlights, CPS brochures, and posters.
