NSU Student Selected Florida’s 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month Teacher
Yanerys Viter, a teacher at Elbridge Gale Elementary School in Wellington and a student at NSU in Palm Beach, was one of the three teachers who were victorious in the Florida 2013 Hispanic Heritage Contest. In commemorating this culture’s legacy and on-going achievements, this contest sought to highlight Excellence in Education by recognizing the work and efforts of both teachers and students within the public school system. Nominations for the contest were submitted by both students and peers across Florida and the three teachers who won, represented the elementary, middle, and high schools levels.
Yanerys, who was the winner for the elementary category, teaches science, social studies, and Spanish to grades 2-3 students. In addition, she instituted an English and Spanish dual language program at her school and runs an after-school Spanish Club. Yanerys is expected to graduate from NSU this fall with a Master’s in Educational Leadership and told NSU “I am thankful to Nova for helping me become the educator that I am”.
Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott announced the winners at the Governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, and told the audience “Great Hispanic leaders have shaped Florida’s history and helped to make our state the best place to live and raise a family”. During the celebration event, each winner was presented with $1, 500 provided by Volunteer Florida.
