NSU Student-Athlete Honored With NCAA Sportsmanship Award
It all began one late October morning at the 2015 Sunshine State Conference Cross Country Championships. A genuine act of human kindness rarely witnessed on the battlefield of competitive sport and even more so, to be publically exalted for putting someone else’s needs before their own. This very mindset has resulted in Nova Southeastern University cross country runner Imke Oelerich (Gr., Braunschweig, Germany) being named, among an elite few, as the NCAA Division II Female Sportsmanship Award winner for 2015-16.
“I am so honored and privileged to be a recipient of the NCAA Sportsmanship Award,” Oelerich said. “During the SSC championships last October, I found myself facing a difficult fork in the road on whether to stop to help a fellow competitor, or keep going. In the end, because our coaches continuously promote the principles of fairness and teamwork, I knew at the end of that race, they would be supportive of my decision to stop and help someone.”
Since the award’s inception in 2000, the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct has honored 67 different institutions and awarded 74 student-athletes across all three NCAA divisions with the prestigious Sportsmanship Award. Oerlich’s award is the second received by a NSU student-athlete. The Sharks’ first was awarded to a NSU rower, Courtney Berger, in 2010-11.
