NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon, Oct. 14

Anne Leon, M.L.S. executive director of public library services at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, will be the featured speaker at NSU’s Speaker’s Forum on Friday, Oct 14. She will talk about the new face of family literacy in library programming: serving children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Leon has a B.A. in education from Queens College, C.U.N.Y., and a masters in library science from University of South Florida (USF). She is a self-proclaimed “accidental librarian” in a career dedicated to working with, and advocating for, children and teens.
After moving to South Florida from New York, Leon’s library career started in 1990 with Broward County Library, at the joint-use South Regional /BCC (now BC) Library, as a library associate in the children’s area. It was going to be a “temporary” job while she was waiting for a teaching position to open up, but at that time the county was offering tuition assistance and a colleague urged her toward the USF program in library science. After serving in positions throughout the library system, providing workshops and training on Youth Services skills and issues through Broward County Library system and SEFLIN, Leon became head of youth services for the North Regional/BCC Library in 1996, providing resources and training for youth services librarians in five libraries in Broward County Library’s Northwest cluster.
In 2001, she joined the inaugural team of the Sherman Library as Assistant Director of public library services, and still heads this team of dedicated professionals and support staff. She has written articles for parents on timely topics for local media as well as for the ALA/ALSC journal Children and Libraries. In December 2011, CAL will feature an article on the development and first-year experience of All-Star Storytime, a PLS program modified for preschoolers diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The weekly NSU Speaker’s Forum, hosted by Larry A. Calderon, Ed.D., Nova vice president for community and governmental relations, takes place each Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The audience is treated to a delicious hot breakfast and an opportunity to learn about the fascinating people that make Nova a great university. The Speaker’s Forum is held on the second floor of the Horvitz Administration Building in the President’s Board Room.
