NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon, June 24

Jean J. Latimer, Ph.D.

Jean J. Latimer, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, will be the featured speaker at the NSU Speaker’s Forum on Friday, June 24. She will discuss a new model system for breast development and its implications for studying premature puberty in racially disparate populations.

Latimer received her bachelor’s from Cornell University and her Ph.D. from Roswell Park Institute, SUNY at Buffalo. Her laboratory has developed a number of important in vitro models related to the human breast and breast cancer.  Her background in developmental biology and murine embryonic stem cells has allowed my laboratory to establish a tissue engineering system that involves multiple autologous cell types from the non-diseased breast.  She has established 48/48 reduction mammoplasty extended explants,12 of which are from AA patients. This system culminates in an organotypic breast epithelial/myoepithelial ductal system in vitro, after one month, over a field of stromal fibroblasts. She has utilized a rich serum-containing medium based upon embryonic stem cell culture called MWRI.  The normal differentiation system is currently under revision for Tissue Engineering although we have published reduction mammoplasty culture work previously in Experimental Cell Research and Cell and Tissue Research.

The weekly NSU Speaker’s Forum, hosted by Larry A. Calderon, Ed.D., NSU vice president for community and governmental relations, takes place each Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The audience is treated to a delicious hot breakfast and an opportunity to learn about the fascinating people that make NSU a great university. The Speaker’s Forum is held on the second floor of the Horvitz Administration Building in the President’s Board Room.  For more information, please contact Tracey-Ann Spencer at straceya@nova.edu or 954-262-5208.
