NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon, July 2
Madhavi Menon, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, will be the featured speaker at the NSU Speaker’s Forum on July 2. She will talk about the costs and benefits of high self-esteem and discuss two previously unexplored ways in which high self-esteem might actually harm preadolescents’ development. Her talk is titled “Self-esteem and Preadolescent Development.”
Menon’s research focuses on processes of social development during middle childhood, focusing on self-esteem, attachment, aggression, gender identity, and achievement. Her research on maternal influences on preadolescent adjustment is currently being funded by the Chancellor’s Faculty Research and Development Grant. She has presented her research findings at numerous national and international conferences, and has published her research in leading journals such as Child Development and Psychological Review.
Menon teaches courses in social and personality development, child and adolescent development, early childhood growth and development, adolescent psychology, and life span human development at NSU.
The weekly NSU Speaker’s Forum is sponsored by Larry Calderon, Ed.D., NSU’s vice president for community and governmental affairs. Taking place each Friday from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., in the Boardroom of Horvitz Administration Building, these forums allow speakers from the university to speak on a vast array of topics, including their latest programs, research, campus activities and more. The forum includes breakfast as well as a question and answer session at the conclusion of the speaker’s presentation.
