NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon, Feb. 3

Barry Barnes, Ph.D., professor of management at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship

Barry Barnes, Ph.D., professor of management at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, will be the featured speaker at NSU’s Speaker’s Forum on Friday, Feb. 3. His presentation is titled: “Everything I Know About Business I Learned from the Grateful Dead.”

Barnes teaches graduate-level courses in leadership, strategic decision-making, and organizational behavior.  He has taught in Germany, China, Brazil, The Bahamas and Jamaica.  He spent 20 years in industry with IBM, John Deere, and other companies, and has also owned four small businesses.  Barnes has worked with many clients from around the U.S. including DHL, Exxon, TracFone Wireless, Inc., Burger King, Buffalo Wild Wings, Two Men and a Truck, Centex Construction, SBA Communications, McCallister’s Deli, Miami-Dade Schools, Chubb & Sons Insurance, BankAtlantic, Visa International, the Materials Handling Industry Association of America, the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Florida, GEICO Insurance, and OmniComm Systems, Inc.

Driven by a passion for understanding change in organizations as well as a love for music, Barnes’ research led to the recent publication of his book Everything I Know About Business I Learned from the Grateful Dead.  The book has earned positive reviews in the Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Examiner, Crain’s New York Business, Kirkus Review, and Publishers Weekly.  The book offers 10 important lessons relevant to all organizations today when decision makers are confounded by “tried and true” methods that are no longer reliable in today’s turbulent, fast changing times.

The weekly NSU Speaker’s Forum, hosted by Larry A. Calderon, Ed.D., NSU vice president for community and governmental relations, takes place each Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The forum will be held at the Carl DeSantis Building room 5026 (Board of Governors Room).
