NSU Salute to Veterans and Service Members Celebrates Commitment and Core Values
More than 130 members of the NSU community attended the NSU Salute to Veterans and Service Members hosted by the President’s Office on November 15, 2011, in honor of all students, alumni, faculty, staff, distinguished guests, and their families who have made the commitment to serve our country. The event was emceed by Anthony J. Silvagni, D.O., dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and veteran of the U.S. Army. Dean Silvagni introduced distinguished speakers, President George Hanbury, Colonel Joseph M. Mastrianna, H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship faculty member Dena Hale, and student and former U.S. Marine Corps sergeant Fred Roger, who each spoke about NSU core values.
Attending veteran and active military students had an opportunity to win one of three NSU Scholarships which were drawn during the program. NSU Student Educational Centers in Orlando, Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, and Fort Myers also honored military students and awarded scholarships to veteran students attending local Information Sessions in November.
NSU’s veteran students in attendance were most appreciative of the university’s commitment to veterans. In preparation for the event, the steering committee had collected pictures and essays from students on how NSU’s core values formed the motivations of their actions.
