The Nova Southeastern University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted its second pageant to raise money for Make-A-Wish South Florida on Monday night, March 14. SAAC and NSU student-athletes raised $900 for the foundation.

“This is our second annual pageant for Make-A-Wish, and it was great to see that a lot of people came out to support the cause,” said Laura Barry, coordinator of athletic academic services. “A lot of the student-athletes look forward to this event, and the participation we had this year was fantastic.”

More than 20 student-athletes from nearly all NSU sports served as pageant contestants. The student-athletes each took turns taking the stage to answer questions and encourage their peers to donate. The event was emceed by track and field’s Monica Sapp (Sr., Miami, Fla.) along with SAAC President and NSU baseball player Steven Fleming (Sr., Palm City, Fla.) helping on stage.

“I participated in this event because it is a really good cause and it raises awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said rower Kamaye Nichols (So., Miami, Fla.). “It is also a good reason for the athletes to get together. It builds a lot of bonds as we don’t get to see the other athletes around campus that much because of our schedules. It is just good to see everyone together, and it’s a good event.”

NSU Athletics continues to raise funds for Make-A-Wish through “Shark Nights” for the spring sports. The next chance to donate will be at “Shark Day” at the Every Meter Matters Row for a Cure event being put on by Shark rower Hannah DiLorenzo (Holland Patent, N.Y.) on Saturday, March 19 from 1-4 p.m. at the Alvin Sherman Library quad.
