NSU Research Spotlight: Healthy Lifestyles
In the alcohol field, self-change — recovering from an alcohol problem without treatment or attending a self-help group — is a common and well-documented phenomenon. Many individuals who drink at high-risk levels, particularly young adults whose problems are not severe, do not seek treatment. To reach such risky drinkers, Nova Southeastern University Professors Linda Sobell, Mark Sobell, Jennie Lou, and their students conducted a study funded by a President’s Faculty Research and Development Grant using an iPhone app called iSelfChange™. The app they developed helps drinkers monitor their alcohol use, evaluate their motivation, and provides practical tips for changing. The study found that young adults who received the app significantly reduced their drinking. The importance of the iSelfChange™ app is that it is available 24/7, confidential, novel, free, and a non-stigmatizing way of helping people change their alcohol use without entering treatment. The app is freely available. Click on this link to download the app or go to the iTunes store and search for iSelfChange™.
