Pride Bite: NSU Ranked Among Most Diverse in the Nation by U.S. News & World Report
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) tied for 10th on U.S. News & World Report’s recently released Campus Ethnic Diversity rankings for the 2014-15 school year. The site assigned a diversity index between 0 and 1 based on how likely it is for an undergraduate student to encounter a fellow student from a different racial or ethnic group than his or her own.
“We are not at all surprised by NSU’s diversity ranking because this is a goal for which we strive,” said NSU President Dr. George Hanbury. “We are committed to providing educational opportunities to people of all cultures, races and religions and we do our best to make sure that everyone feels at home on our campuses.”
NSU’s diversity index was 0.71, tying with Texas Women’s University in Denton, University of California – Santa Cruz, University of Illinois – Chicago, University of Texas – Arlington, and University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The highest ranked university was Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in Newark, which had an index of 0.76.
The six racial or ethnic categories considered in this index were black or African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, Pacific Islander, white (non-Hispanic) and multiracial.
NSU commonly ranks among the most diverse universities in the nation. Diverse: Issues in Higher Education recently published a study that concluded the university awards more doctoral and professional degrees to Hispanics and other minorities than any other university in the United States and is second only to Stanford University in California for professional degrees awarded to African Americans.
Further, NSU was ranked among the top universities for undergraduate degrees awarded to minorities by this same study/publication in several categories, including registered nursing, nursing administration, nursing research and clinical nursing (No. 7); legal professions and studies (No. 10); and health professions and related programs (No. 17).
