NSU Puerto Rico hosted the Symposium on Human Trafficking on Wednesday, January 11 commemorating National Human Trafficking Awareness Day for the first time in Puerto Rico. This celebration took place simultaneously with US and American territories.  January 11 was declared National Human Trafficking Awareness Day by the US Senate in 2007.

NSU understands the importance of research and education on human trafficking. Brianna Black Kent, Ph.D. and Sandrine Gaillard-Kenney, Ed.D., founded CREATE, the Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation in 2014. The organization’s mission is to equip all members of the community with the skills to identify victims of human trafficking resulting in increased reporting to appropriate health and social services.  Kent and Gaillard-Kenney traveled from the Fort Lauderdale campus to Puerto Rico to take part in the event.  More than 90 guests attended the Symposium where government and community leaders hosted presentations and panel discussions.  For more information on CREATE, visit http://www.nova.edu/create/index.html.
