NSU Professor Attends The World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in Kyoto, Japan

After an unforgettable congress in Kyoto, Japan, one NSU professor is grateful to be back home.

The World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology is a weeklong series of meetings that occurs once every four years. This year’s congress marked its 18th anniversary and took place on July 1 – July 6, 2018. The theme was, Pharmacology for the Future ~Science, Drug Development, and Therapeutics.~

In attendance was Robert Speth, Ph.D., a researcher and professor of pharmaceutical sciences in NSU’s College of Pharmacy. Speth was invited to give a lecture on Pleiotropic Mechanisms and Actions of the Brain Renin-Angiotensin System. In addition to participating in lectures and connecting with other scientists, he and many others in attendance were looking forward to experiencing the city of Kyoto.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

On the fourth day of the congress, the region began to experience heavy rainfall. By the afternoon, nearly everyone’s cell phones began emitting flash flood warnings. As the rain and warnings continued, attendees were told that many trains had been delayed or had stopped running altogether. Nevertheless, the day’s meetings continued.

The day that Speth was to go home proved to be a challenging one. With no trains and delayed bus schedules, it seemed he would not make his 5pm flight home. Fortunately, he was able to connect with two other congress participants, both from South Africa, and the three found a cab driver willing to take them on the long drive over to Kansai International Aiport in Osaka.

Coordinating payment to the cab driver became another challenge, but one that ended in what Speth called, “my most successful international collaboration yet.” All three were able to make their flights.
